Over 11 million GP patient appointments are missed every year. When each missed GP appointment is estimated to cost £18, that’s £180 million of wasted NHS resources.
On top of this, some 5 million practice nurse appointments and 4 million outpatient appointments are missed every year. In all, nearly 20 million NHS health appointments are missed across the UK each year.
According to the DPP, Developing Patient Partnerships, many surgeries (69%) believe that the main reason patients miss appointments is because they forget. Other patients are believed to feel better and so choose not to attend (22%).
The answer according to most practices (65%) is better communication through public awareness campaigns. DPP’s ‘Keep It or Cancel It’ campaign is designed to reduce the number of missed appointments and avoiding patients being struck off their surgery list.
In addition, the Government has pledged to improve health services in the UK. £12.4bn has been set aside to fund the NHS Connecting for Health IT programme; this is set to revolutionise the way that the NHS delivers care.
